Some families in India are so MALE-CENTRIC that they end up with half a dozen girls in the hope of producing at least one male baby; the picture above is a family in Nandgaon who end up with 11 girl child in an attempt to have a boy child. Four of their daughters are attending the Bhaktivedanta Vaishnavi Gurukula free school for the girls in Nandgaon.
Most girls in our school are from underprivileged families who would otherwise not be able to attend school. Many girls that are now in school were used to either beg in the area or were constrained to household activities with no hope of ever getting educated.
Girls are usually seen as burden in the rural areas, with no concept of educating them and are married off early, sometimes even as a child. This puts them in a very dangerous situation where they are forced into adult roles at a very young age.
The Bhaktivedanta Vaishnavi Gurukula is an attempt to educate girls at least up to higher school and give them vocational training. This will enable them to be literate and professionally independent. This school adopts a holistic approach to education, a combination of Indian vedic culture and modern education. The emphasis is to enable a girl child to face the challenges of modern world while rooted in Indian spiritual culture.
YOUTH OF TODAY
We’re the youth of today!
I NEED YOUR SHELTER.
Earth can be a lonely place
Blank stares on the people’s face
I contemplate their pointless chase
That traps me and my friends
Is this the place where I belong?
Where did we go wrong?
Will it last real long?
Are you too singing this song?
Sometimes I feel it
Sometimes I feel all so alone
And yes yes I must confess
I feel so far from home
Mantra take me home I trust you
Mantra take me home
Take me to the place where I belong
Life’s a puzzle the thoughtful solve
But most choose not to get involved
Because of this we don’t envolve
Just look around my friend
And life’s meaning can be hard to grasp
All that’s certain is it won’t last
We’re all spirits looking for transcendence
Oh mantra grant me that independence.
